Welcome to the Distance Education website for faculty. Teaching online-based classes invites opportunities for creativity, innovation, and integration of technology. It differs, however from traditional classroom instruction
and learning and poses the challenge of actively engaging students who will interact with the instructor, fellow students and course content in alternative ways. Instructors will design courses, assess learning, monitor instructional activities and attendance of students they may never personally meet. Distance Education is here to provide you with assistance and support in preparing and teaching online-based classes (fully online and hybrid) and web-enhanced on-campus courses. Visit the Distance Education Training, Support, and Resources pages.

Instructors who plan to teach in any mode which requires the use of Canvas (online, hybrid or web-enhanced) must first complete Canvas training at RCCD. This can be done fully online through the 4 self-paced modules of the Online Canvas Academy, OR face-to-face at your college with one of the District Educational Technology Trainers. In addition to basic instruction on Canvas, the Canvas training covers administrative policies and procedures for online instruction, 508 compliance & accessibility, accreditation information, as well as additional district services and resources available for distance education instructors.

Each college generally offers rotating on-site training sessions each week. Check with your college's trainer for a current schedule of availability and training sessions.
For the Online Canvas Academy, sessions open each 1st of the month and close on the 30th day of the month. You can enroll at any time during the month-long session, but keep in mind - each session closes on the 30th of the month.
